Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/23/11

Of all the days I'd like to have more than ONE CRAPPY-ASS BLURRY WAIST-UP PHOTO of my outfit, this was it.

That's my new cardigan and scarf from LLBean, and they're awesomeness incarnate, but you can't tell because it was too late and I was too tired to be bothered with decent photos.

Lesson learned. And also I think I'll repeat this exact outfit again tomorrow and take proper pictures then. Because it's goodness.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/17/11

There was a thread on my knitting forum recently about how LLBean stuff is all dowdy and old ladyish. So that was my cue to prove them wrong.

I love this dress. I've only worn it a few times so far, but do you ever get a piece and just know that you're going to adore it for years and years and years? Yeah, that's me and this dress. I'm in it for the long haul.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/15/11

Guess what? I've actually come up with a GOOD excuse to not do laundry.

I call it - "outfit creativity"!

This shirt almost never gets worn, unless all my other clothes are either dirty and/or damp and hanging on drying racks. And then I pull this from my closet, and think about its lovely little print and how I never wear it and how I really should. And then I wear it.

This happens a few times a year. Which I guess is enough reason for me to keep the shirt around, eh? :-)

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/8/11

Sometimes these "I must be practical. Must wear clothes in which I can walk four miles to work and back" outfits get rather dull.

What is interesting to me, though, is that a year ago I would've been sooooo proud of this exact outfit - for combining textures and colors and working from a well-rounded color palette and resisting the urge to over- or under-accessorize.

But a "WIN!" from a year ago is a "meh" for today.

Meh.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 1/26/11

I was told yesterday by a very uninformed person that this outfit was "over the top" because I was wearing a "corset".

The perils of being surrounded by nerds, I guess. (The perils of being surrounded by one hyperactive large blonde dog musn't be discounted, either)

But despite all that, I love this waistcoat.

I also wanted to talk about that buttondown for a minute. I have had it for several years - I think I bought it during my first "must obtain a work wardrobe" shopping trips back in 2008. It doesn't do a lot for me, but it also doesn't...not do a lot for me. I rarely wear it and yes it's taking up a hanger and 1/8" of valuable closet space, but I'm not about to get rid of it. This seems to be one of those basic items that when ya need it, ya need it. Right?

I really liked this outfit. This one may appear again :-)

EVERYTHING (waistcoat, jeanskirt, buttondown): Old Navy

The Spoils - LLBean

Back in July or August I ordered a dress from LLBean Signature Collection, knowing full well that it was out of stock until January. I figured that would be plenty of time to forget I'd ordered the darn thing, and then be pleasantly surprised when it arrived.

I'm not the only one who does this, right?

Well, it worked! And also I LOVE THIS DRESS.

The fabric is just perfect - pretty, and nice and durable and I can tell it will hold up for years. And it's the perfect weight for year-round wear. Cut and fit are spot-on. The length is exactly what I'd wanted. The shoulders fit perfectly, as do the hips.

I think I may run away to Paris with this dress. Someone tell Jeff, OK?

(PS>The bitch of it is, that it's no longer available online. Which I guess makes me a tease. Sorry 'bout that. I'll let you know if it re-appears...)

Daily Outfit - Kate - 12/9/10

I haz a helper.

My helper is fluffy, and deposits long orange and white hairs on my outfit.

The glare of a kitten scorned:

I'd been wanting to combine that belt with this dress since I first got it, and it has finally come to fruition!

I love this dress. It's so amazingly comfy, and versatile, and warm and happy and pretty.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 11/24/10

This is how I spent most of the day:

Exciting, huh? But I was freaking COLD!

When I wasn't so freaking COLD!, this is what I looked like:

I'll give the scarf a proper write-up later (w/ good pics) when I've got better light, but for now I'll just say that I like it quite a bit. It makes me happy.

It's really hard to catch the true color of my new glasses, but I think that's pretty accurate. I continue to adore them :-)

Daily Outfit - Kate - 10/7/10

I won't call this an outtake. I must call it 'the best of the lot.'

And also, 'damn that dog.'

Perturbed much?

(PS I really liked this grey + purple + blue + white + brown color palette.)

Daily Outfit - Kate - 9/21/10

There's a lot happening in this picture:

1)dogblur
2)my neck looks fat, for no apparent reason. Weird camera angle?
3)awesome mixing of black and brown. <3!!!
4)comically haughty facial expression
5)a Jeff standing behind the camera going, "Make a face! Do SOMETHING!"

I like this picture better, but it doesn't really do the outfit justice, now does it?

Skirt: GAP, 2008
Shirt: Target (super-clearance!) 2010. It's a size too big but was so cheap I bought it anyway and have resolved to either wear it belted, or get fat. OK, OK, wear it belted.
Tank (1): thrifted, originally Old Navy
Tank (2): Victoria's Secret
Boots: LLBean
Belt: Target, 2009

BLACK. BROWN. BLACK. BROWN. BLACK. BROWN. I love that combo.

The Spoils: LLBean

I did it.

You knew I was gonna do it, right?

Really, I think we should just accept it, and move on.

Fact of the matter is, an LLBean Closet Craving will, almost inevitably, turn into an LLBean The Spoils.

It just happens. Don't ask me how, 'cause I have no freaking idea.

But...how could I resist?

The sleeves that can be worn down or rolled up.

The fine-wale corduroy.

The adorable removable sash (I'm going to wear this with, like, every belt I own.)

The perfect length and fit (you'll just have to trust me here; in the August heat I couldn't wear it for one second longer than absolutely necessary).

The super feminine detailing.

This dress and I? We were meant to be.

Now the real challenge is - can I resist ordering it in blue, too?

Closet Craving - LLBean Signature wedge sandals

Be still, my heart.

I almost don't wanna tell y'all about these babies, in case someone else snaps up the last pair.

WHY OH WHY AM I NOT WEALTHY?!

Daily Outfit - Kate - 5/17/10

It's a double whammy today:
1)Outfit photos with my cheapo P&S.
2)Outfit photos sans Jeff.

::sob::

But I just told myself - "Lots of people do this ALL THE TIME, self. And they survive. And so can you."

So I did.

BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE ME CROP. YOU CAN'T YOU CAN'T YOU CAN'T.

I miss Jeff.

ALTHOUGH yay for this extended early spring-like weather - I may be wearing these LLBean boots into June! :-D

Daily Outfit - Kate - 5/11/10

This, my friends, is the face of pure, unadulterated pride:

And also exhaustion. For today, I rode my bike to and from the train station, instead of driving! For the first time ever! And I survived! Read all about it here, if you're interested. Which you probably aren't. That's OK; I heart y'all anyway.

So anyway, that's why I look so tired, and proud.

As promised, this was my attempt at black + brown + grey. Does it count as cheating because the plaid top has all three colors already? I hope not, 'cause I love it.

Closet Craving: LLBean Casco Bay Windbreaker

I know, that seems really weird and random for a Closet Craving, doesn't it? But here's the thing: sometimes you just need practicality. Sometimes you're standing at the train platform at 8:15 in the morning and it's raining sideways and all you want in the entire world is a decent jacket. Sometimes there's just a fine mist in the air and you really wanna ride your bike but it's just a bit too damp out. Sometimes you're taking an impromptu weekend trip to Kirksville and you're in "throw a change of underwear and toothbrush into your purse and go!" mode and you think it'll be a bit chilly.

Sometimes you just need a supercute, casual, sturdy windbreaker.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 3/25/10

We were rushing this evening, so the photos are even crappier than usual. But that's OK, because this outfit was the epitome of laziness and comfort :-)

I originally put it together to wear with this new shawl I knitted, but then once I got it all on I realized - I really needed a darker color up at my neck. So I subbed in *another* shawl I knitted.

It's rough being me, you know.

Especially when I'm having a BAD FREAKING HAIR DAY.

Ever have days when you just want to cut your bangs OFF? Yes. Me too.

LLBean

It's no secret at all that I love LLBean. Passionately.

It's a love that has spanned decades, from the sleeping bag and stuffed bear ("Ellie" who I find no evidence of online, but she was really cute and wore a Fair Isle sweater) of my childhood, through my first snuggly, cozy winter shirt and snowboots bought my freshman year of college (back when I thought I'd never get used to the cold weather in Kirksville), to my present affection for a ruffled button-down shirt and my Town and Field boots. It's really a saying something, that in my 15+ years of patronage I've *never* worn out an LLBean item. Even those snow boots which hauled me to class and back twice a day for three years, and trucked three-year-olds around a playground, and got abused on hikes and camping trips at Thousand Hills, are still in rotation (currently my go-to dog walking shoes :-))

With all this in mind, you can only imagine how excited I was to discover LLBean's forthcoming new Signature line, to debut in less than two weeks (why yes, I have been counting the days)!

Details about the new line are scarce, but I'm already amazingly psyched.

Any photoshoot involving Sawyer can't be bad, right? :-P

Seriously, though - I adore the fit of that shirtdress - almost guaranteed to be universally flattering. I'd like to see if/how the sleeves unroll - 3/4 length? Full length? And is this the same fabric used in the men's chamois shirts (which is insanely soft)?

If the quality of the Signature products is at all comparable to that which the company has already established, I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

I love how the dress is styled above, but I can also imagine that dress paired with these:

and this:

Cute, right? Fun and wearable and practical and classic (but also not *not* trendy, IYKWIM). Perfect for a rainy spring weekend :-)

I've only ever had one quibble with LLBean in the past, and that was with the way they styled clothing for catalogs and ads. Jeans were styled too short, tops too big, and skirts always (always!) too high on the waist. In short, everything was styled as if my grandma (no offense, Grammy) would be wearing it. For a company with such wonderful, timeless items it was really a shame to see them limit themselves to a stodgy demographic.

If you're not looking carefully and with an open mind, it can be really easy to overlook so many cute pieces. Like the shirt I linked above. Here's one of this year's colors, on the model:

SNORE. Holy hell, I'm bored just looking at it. Why not take that EXACT SAME SHIRT and EXACT SAME MODEL, and wear it open with a cute tank underneath and throw on a nice pair of straight leg jeans (only let's wear 'em a size smaller, ok?) and add some flats. And voila, there you have adorably mixed patterns and visual interest and texture and fit, all within the current product range. ( Here's how I styled the exact same shirt just the other day. Skirt is LLBean, too.)

That was fun - let's do another one.

Here's a cute skirt:

Pair it with this:

(I LOVE how coral and maroon-y magenta look together!)

with this underneath:

and these on your feet:

(hey, it's my game and there are no rules against using items I already own :-P)

Super cute, right? Much cuter than the blah, boring, neutral styling the site currently uses.

LLBean, I know you can do it. That's why for years I've been looking past the stiff models and boxy styling and have seen your cute clothes for what they really are. I hope that your new Signature line will remove a lot of that work for me. I hope it makes the brand even more popular than before. And I hope it brings your demographic below the AARP range. It's about time, don't you think?

Daily Outfit - Kate - 3/1/10

I wrote a haiku about today's outfit. Wanna hear it? Good.

I love LLBean.
It is Monday, which yeah - sucks.
Pink boots are so cute.

TAH DAH!!!!!

And also? My skirt really fits. I promise. In fact, it's a bit large through the hips. So I put my hands in my pockets to try and make it fitted-er (shut up that's a word) and I guess I overcompensated.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/25/10

If I were a better outfit-maker, I'd have incorporated more purple (besides just the corduroy skirt) into this ensemble. Unfortunately, 4 days of insomnia has taken its toll on me, so let's just thank [deity] that I remembered to put a skirt on over my slip, eh?

Hey, I already said I was exhausted. So I won't apologize for the slumpy shoulders and goony expression. MY EYES ARE OPEN. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!

I love this bib-style shirt. It gives that "Oh hai, boobs!" effect for those of us who aren't naturally blessed ;-)
