Daily Outfit - Kate - 9/18/10

Saturday is for errands, cleaning, and an outfit made up of "favorites":

This is also the blog - and life! - debut of this awesome scarf, which my mom found at a head shop in Lawrence, KS a couple months back.

What my mom was *doing* in a head shop in Lawrence, KS, I'm not about to ask. But presumably it at least partially consisted of scarf shopping. So it's OK. :-P

Oh! And also! I made you a present!

It's a face.

I hope you enjoy it.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 9/14/10

Oh man it feel like it has been AGES since I've been able to wear normal (read: non "businesswoman-y") clothes. But it's really only been like 5 days. But still.

Here's the thing: even though I've been in a white-collar office job for over two years now, I've thus far managed to elude the whole "button-down shirt, slacks and pumps" environment. First by hiding out with a bunch of architects, now by barricading myself in my office in a tiny corner of academia. I've never worked somewhere that frowns upon handknitted shawls or twirly skirts or even pink cowboy boots (though maybe not all three at once). I've been very lucky.

But even so, there are still occasions - forgive me for not going into more detail (I like to keep work and play decidedly separate) - where a girl's gotta look uber-professional, and neutral, and remove all potential for offense. Enter the black pumps, grey a-line skirt, and crisp blue top. I figure that also justifies the lack of outfit posts this past week ;-)

And now that I'm back to normal, I'm...back to normal :-)

I thought this picture was really cute 'till Jeff pointed out that Roxie's hiney looks like a dead turkey on the floor next to me.

Sorry, Roxie. Nothing personal.

This necklace + this cardigan + these shoes = my new most favorite thing ever.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 8/19/10

YAY MOM!

I'd have never been daring enough to pick it up on my own, but when when it's given to me? HECK YES!

My mom has always had great taste in clothes for me, actually. Even when I was in the ennui-soaked throes of teenagerdom, I'd often defer to her suggestions. I remember one time in particular when I was about 16, Mom went to Chicago and visited Forever 21 and H&M (this was before they had those in KC) and bought me back such wonderment as I'd never seen before - frilly skirts, a little pink tank top that I *still* wear, and the cutest jacket! How many teenagers are so lucky (and moreover, how many teenagers *realize* it?)?

So what I'm getting at is, Mom's taste has come through for me again. This may be my new favorite top.

It's frilly and flowy and comfy and airy and comfy and sexy.

I love how it looks with this thrifted belt. And, probably, with all my other belts :-D

Daily Outfit - Kate - 7/20/10

With how disheveled and wrinkly I look today, I bet you can tell that I:
1)Rode my bike
2)Carried three loads of groceries upstairs
3)Walked the dog
4)Tried on a couple new tops
5)Cooked dinner

Right?

Well guess what? I DID NONE OF THOSE THINGS. Nope, I'm just one of those super-talented people who can manage to look like complete crap for NO GOOD REASON.

Be jealous of me, y'all. :-D

Top: Old Navy, for like $6
Belt: thrifted
Skirt: Old Navy (heyyy!)
Sandals: you tell me
Earrings: mum
Bracelet: 'tis a mystery

Daily Outfit - Kate - 7/7/10

OMG I can't believe I'm actually showing you this.

WORST HAIR EVER. WORST POSE EVER. WORST EXPRESSION EVER.

But a cute outfit. Even if I did look vaguely Amish on the webcam tonight (Jeff even said so. The fact that I was shoveling macaroni and cheese in my mouth and singing along to Lady Gaga at the same time must not've factored into his assessment.)

I dunno. Headband? Turtleneck? Plus I guess with the Friendship Bread, I can see it...

Tee: thrifted
Cardigan: Target, spring 2010
Skirt: Apostrophe by Sears, 2008
Shoes: somewhere. Sometime. A long time ago.
Earrings: mom
Bracelet: Fair Ophelia Designs, at Strange Folk last year

Daily Outfit - Kate - 4/5/10

The fashion magazines and makeover TV shows always talk about outfits "which can take you from work to after-work drinks in two easy steps."

Well, I have simplified it even more. Behold:

1)Go to work wearing this:

2)After work, go have drinks with co-workers wearing this:

Presto change-o, it's called "no one there cares what you look like anyway."

You'll thank me later.

In other words, this outfit is actually a bit of a breakthrough for me, because it's the first time I've worn this skirt with anything but a blue tee and black cardigan. I've had it for aaaaaages and I love it, but I've always been trapped in that "this is what I wear it with" box. Which, as you may know, is an exceedingly hard box to get out of. But I have succeeded! Maybe. Sort of.

Anyway, cute + comfortable + spring-y = win in my book :-)

Tee: GAP outlet, summer 2009
Cardigan: Target, winter 2009/2010
Flats: Michelle D (Dillards), summer 2006 or 2007
Skirt: American Eagle, 2005 (I was visiting Jeff in St. Louis when I bought this - he was napping and I didn't want to just sit around his parents' house being a nuisance, so I went to the mall and bought this)
Necklace: Don't remember. Very old.
Bracelet: mumsiewumsie
Earrings: Twisted Silver

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/24/10

I don't have a whole lot to say about this, actually. The dress was on clearance at Target a few months back; this is the second time I've worn it (first time was pre-blog). I rarely wear polyester but the pattern was too pretty to pass up :-)

Next time I'm gonna wear it with a cream-colored scarf, and maybe with a layered necklace in a subtle color (as inspired by academichic earlier this week).

This time, though, I tried to play up the lesser-noticed colors in the dress - the white, magenta and green are very dominant when you see this in person, so I wore it with red (scarf), orangey gold (earrings), and just a hint of green (bracelet). Those are all colors that appear in the print too, they're just not the first ones that jump out at you.

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2/18/10

Still now sure how I feel about today's outfit, honestly. I think my opinion of it may be marred by my growing hatred of these body-segmenting tights. I also don't feel like the layers transitioned as it smoothly as the last time I tried this trick - I don't think it was as noticeable in person, but in photos you can definitely see the waistline of my skirt.

THAT SAID, I love the theory of this outfit - the plaid peeking out below the dress, the contrast between the prim dress vs the preppy plaid vs the rustic cowboy boots. And this dress? OMG LOVE IT SO MUCH. It fits me perfectly and I'm finally seeing the light re: empire waists. It's all about finding the *right* empire-waisted garment. Consider my eyes opened.

And also? The details on this dress are fabulous. I've always liked the fit and fabrics from BCBG, and I'm so happy to have found another piece that fit within my budget (hint: Nordstrom Rack price + 75% off clearance = gettin' there)

Oh, and the earrings were a totally impulse, last-minute decision as I was dashing out the door this morning, but I love how they worked. I adore them but don't wear them often enough because they're relatively large. But I love the style and the color just makes me happy in my heart whenever I see them. Plus they're incredibly lightweight and comfortable. They really should get rotated in more...

Daily Outfit - Kate - 2-3-10

2 in a row, now. That is, this is my second day in a row feeling good about my outfit. We'll have to see how long I can keep up the momentum :-)

This was my second time EVER wearing that white button-down (the first time being - what else? - a job interview about two years ago) and I really need to get it into my wardrobe rotation - I'd forgotten how perfect the fit is, and it's pretty much the essence of a neutral, eh?

Daily Outfit - Kate - 1/25/10

Look at me! Actually blogging an outfit the day I wear it!

I sorta like this, actually. Maybe I'll keep it up.

Anyway, I loved today's outfit.

(even if the photo, as per usual, makes me look silly. Today - "depressed one-legged person." Charming.)

I've had that shirt for a while, but thought it was a "weekends only" top until I saw Erin on The Office wear THAT EXACT SHIRT a few weeks ago. And *she* wore it to work. (And y'know what else? I had it 'first' ;-D). So I started thinking about how to dress it up a bit, and of course my mind immediately jumped to a wide belt. I feel like I could've done better with the skirt - ideally something voluminous and grey, with colored tights (dark green? navy?) - but I had to work with what I've got.

I also think I've finally (mostly) broken in the studded boots. So glad!
